"The road in life forks in every moment, with one path leading toward confusion, separateness, and entanglement, and the other toward clarity, connection, and mental freedom. With mind whispering, the choice can be ours."

Why sometimes do even the smallest events send us into a downward spiral? Whether we're aware of it or not, our feelings and outlook are constantly shaped by learned patterns, or habitual modes of being. These have the power to dictate our sense of wellbeing and our very perceptions of our lives and the world around us. These modes - distinct orchestrations of how we think and feel, how we act and interact - can open us up to delight and wisdom or preoccupy us with fear and despair, driving and distorting our experiences like invisible puppeteers of the mind.

In this engaging and insightful work, New York Times best-selling author Tara Bennett-Goleman offers us new ways to cut the strings of our self-defeating habits and find emotional freedom.

By bringing together the latest in cognitive psychology, the neuroscience of habit change, Eastern philosophy, and her experience with horse whispering, Bennett-Goleman helps liberate us from our most challenging mental roadblocks so we can identify emotional triggers and dysfunctional habits in ourselves and our relationships and begin to build new positive patterns in our lives and our world.

A groundbreaking map of the emotional mind, Mind Whispering helps transform our emotions, improve our relationships, connect us with a wise and compassionate heart, and finally live with a more lasting sense of happiness.

As a meditator, horse owner, and student of horse whispering as well as Buddhism, I was thrilled to learn about this book in a post on LinkedIn. I bought it immediately. And, I must be honest in saying that it failed to pull all three ideas (psychology, Buddhism, horse whispering concepts) into a compelling, straightforward argument. It's not that the kernel of the Big Idea is not there, it just did not come together in this iteration of the book. The ideas do not mesh well as presented and end up being a disjointed read that is characterized by mixed, complex metaphors, widely disparate concepts from horses and Buddhism juxtaposed against each other, dovetailed by core concepts from psychology/neurobiology. Some paragraphs left my mind spinning, needing to be re-read 2 to 3 times to "get" it. Complex, difficult to follow, difficult to take away what one needs to do to "mind whisper" generatively. And, I wish it wasn't so because I have a deep respect for the author and her husband. Sadly, I returned the book.

Mind Whispering A New Map to Freedom from SelfDefeating Emotional Habits (Audible Audio Edition) Tara BennettGoleman Karen White HarperAudio Books Reviews

Do you have behaviors or emotions you would like to change? Perhaps you get angry a little too often, or find yourself retreating when there's conflict. Or maybe you are in a dissatisfying relationship, are frustrated with your boss, or just feel like the world isn't giving you what you need.

If so, Tara Bennett-Goleman's brilliant new book, Mind Whispering A New Map to Freedom from Self-Defeating Emotional Habits should be on your reading list. This exquisitely written book will give you a complete roadmap for transforming dysfunctional and counterproductive emotions and behaviors into new patterns that will allow you to flourish.

It starts by building a vocabulary of emotional habits, which Tara calls modes. She draws from Buddhist philosophy to identify three basic modes attachment, aversion, and bewilderment. While these modes, in their healthy form, can lead to productive and fulfilling living, they often manifest more negatively, causing suffering and hardship for ourselves and others. The key is to transform these negative modes into secure mode, a state of integrated wholeness that brings you into balance so you can engage more fully with the world around you.

How do you make the transition into secure mode?

First you need to learn to recognize the negative patterns, so you can spot them when they occur. Then, you need to begin the process of mindful habit change, which is at the core of Mind Whispering. Tara builds on Charles Duhigg's breakthrough book, The Power of Habit, and then, with clarity and precision, layers in the practice of mindfulness.

This is where the book really shines. Tara's gentle and non-judgmental guidance makes you feel safe and secure. She illustrates her points through numerous real-life examples, so you understand exactly what she's talking about. Already, the journey has led to some fresh new insights that I've put into action for my own life.

Mind Whispering is one of those rare books--so beautifully and eloquently written, yet practical and inspiring. I highly recommend!
full of Buddhist ideology
nice
I just love this book! It is NOT light reading, though - in order to get the most out of it, a deep focus is required. I plan to read it again once I’m finished!
Book was somewhat interesting but certainly not as useful to me as her previous work "Emotional Alchemy".
Great book. One of the best I have read. Completely insightful and gives fantastic insight on how to manage our minds and emotions and what we need to look for during times of stress when our minds can take over.
I loved Tara's first book and was looking forward to this one. However, it just feels like she had to come up with enough of a marketable concept to sell it alongside the flood of basic level mindfulness books out there. I agree with the other reviewers so far that were also disappointed. There was so little compelling content that I moved through the book in one sitting. I am a hypnotherapist and teach public mindfulness classes as well as to corporate employees, so I work extensively with helping people break free from old limiting, unproductive and unhealthy thoughts and behavioral patterns. Unfortunately I did not gain new insights that could benefit my students and clients. If you're new to the field this will probably be much more interesting to you than it was for me, yet it is all over the place and challenging to tie together. Also, as much as I respect the Buddhist roots of mindfulness, IMHO I choose to be more inclusive and reach out to people of all faiths who can benefit by bringing in mindfulness practices - many are turned off by a Buddhist framework.
